Skincare 101 – Boosters

skincare serums, skincare 101, skincare boosters

My Skincare 101 series is meant to be a resource for you to find the right products to help you have the best skin ever. This post will continue on in the series with Skincare Boosters. What are they? Do you need one? Which is the right one for you?

Skincare boosters are a targeted skincare product that focuses on a unique ingredient in a more concentrated formula that addresses a specific skincare concern. Boosters address specific concerns like dehydration, enlarged pores and hyper pigmentation.

Typically a singular ingredient product can be used alone or mixed in with other products like a moisturizer to boost their effectiveness. These can be used daily or just when skin needs a little something extra.

What is the Difference Between a Booster and a Serum?

Boosters are more concentrated while serums are more encompassing. Serums can be a cocktail of “anti aging” ingredients while boosters are singular, more concentrated formulas and address specific skincare concerns as mentioned above. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular and common skincare boosters.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid attracts and binds up to 1000 times its own weight in water to boost skin hydration levels. This can be used alone or mixed with serums or moisturizers.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of my favorite boosters and I use one daily. Vitamin C helps to reduce hyperpigmentation, boost collagen production and more. I typically use Vitamin C by itself before my other serums and moisturizers during the day and followed with SPF.

Retinol

Another one of my favorite boosters and skincare ingredients, Retinol helps to accelerate cellular turn over, increase collagen production, minimize fine lines and wrinkles and so much more. I like to use my Retinol at night.

Ceramides

Ceramides are helpful in protecting your skin barrier and retaining moisture levels. This ingredient can also be found in certain serums and moisturizers.

Peptides

Peptides help to prevent loss of firmness

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is having a huge moment right now. This is actually an anti-oxidant known as Vitamin B3. It has anti-inflammatory properties, helps to soothe irritation, hydrate skin, reduce pores, smooth skin and minimize fine lines.

Anti-Oxidants

Anti-oxidants are super important to include in your skincare routine. They help to prevent and slow down damage to cells by external agers like free radicals. We already mentioned a few but some popular anti-oxidants are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Retinol, Reservratrol, Green Tea and more.

I included this one because these can be used together in a serum or other anti-aging product or used alone as mentioned above.

Anti-Redness

There are a few products that can be helpful with reducing redness in the skin like Tumeric, Blue Tansy, Marula Oil and more. These help to sooth skin as well. My favorite to use for my eczema breakouts is the Acure Blue Tansy oil.
